Developing technologies for the medicine of tomorrow

We research new technologies and use them to develop solutions for medical practice. In doing so, various disciplines and departments work closely together.

Inside Erbe

Philipp has been working as a supervisor Electronics Engineering in Research at Erbe.

He shares how initial ideas turn into innovative solutions, why collaboration with healthcare professionals is so important, and what continues to inspire him about his work to this day.

New ideas often emerge through direct exchanges with physicians and medical professionals who share specific challenges they face in everyday clinical practice. At the same time, many ideas come from entirely different technical fields or observations in everyday life.

Sometimes, the process even works the other way around: We start with an interesting technical solution and then look for a suitable medical challenge it could help address.

This collaboration plays a central role. Physicians and medical professionals are important sources of inspiration and help us better understand the actual needs of everyday clinical practice.

Ongoing exchange is also essential throughout the development process. For example, we regularly invite Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) to test new approaches and prototypes. Their feedback is then directly incorporated into further development.

One of our key partners is the Development department, to which we hand over our research findings and concepts for further product development.

We also work closely with Marketing, which frequently initiates research projects by bringing market requirements, needs, and specific questions to our attention.

For me, it's primarily the combination of meaningful work, varied responsibilities, and exciting technical challenges.

It's motivating to work on technologies that have the potential to deliver tangible medical benefits in the future. At the same time, research offers the opportunity to continuously explore new topics and pursue unconventional approaches to solving problems.

Beyond the technical challenges, it's often the human aspect that presents the greatest difficulties. Bringing together different perspectives, expectations, and priorities isn't always easy.

Especially in interdisciplinary projects, coordinating between everyone involved can sometimes be more challenging than solving the technical problem itself.
